Add to this ongoing construction works such as the Metro Railway (being built all over Mumbai to lessen peak hour rush) bisecting the various roads create pockets of pools of water along the length of the roads.

I live in Navi Mumbai, the city adjacent to old Mumbai. I am proud to say that over a period of time, the municipal corporation of Navi Mumbai- NMMC- has improved the infrastructure in our city so much so that there is minimal flooding and water logging in almost all parts of Navi Mumbai. Timely desilting measures carried out by the corporation have also helped prevent flooding and backflow of rainwater even during high tides.

The symptoms typically appear 2 to 30 days after exposure to the bacteria, with an average incubation period of 7 to 14 days.

The early symptoms of leptospirosis [Acute Phase] include:

  1. high fever,

  2. headache,

  3. muscle aches,

  4. chills, and

  5. red eyes.



Some individuals may also experience vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and cough. As the disease progresses, entering the Immune Phase, more severe symptoms may manifest, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), kidney failure, liver damage, and meningitis. In severe cases, leptospirosis can be life-threatening.

What Investigations are there for detecting leptospirosis?

A healthcare professional will conduct a physical examination, inquire about symptoms and potential exposure to contaminated water or animals, and order laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Blood and urine samples may be collected to detect the presence of Leptospira bacteria or antibodies produced by the body in response to the infection.

The following investigations related to leptospirosis may be asked to be done by your doctor-

1.Serological testing:

This involves testing for the presence of specific antibodies in the patient's blood. The most commonly used serological tests for leptospirosis include the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). For example, a patient suspected of having leptospirosis may undergo a MAT to determine the specific strain of Leptospira causing the infection.

2.Polymerase chain reaction (PCR):

PCR is a molecular technique used to detect and amplify DNA strands. In the case of leptospirosis, PCR can be used to detect the presence of Leptospira DNA in biological samples such as blood, urine, or cerebrospinal fluid. For instance, PCR can be used to identify the Leptospira serovar present in a blood sample from a patient.

3.Culture:

Culturing Leptospira bacteria from clinical samples is another method of diagnosing leptospirosis. This involves isolating the bacteria in a specialized culture medium and observing their growth characteristics.

A positive culture can confirm the presence of Leptospira in the patient's sample. For example, a urine sample from a patient suspected of having leptospirosis may be cultured to isolate and identify the Leptospira bacteria.

4.Dark-field microscopy:

This technique is used to directly visualize Leptospira bacteria in clinical samples. Dark-field microscopy uses a special microscope and lighting technique that makes the bacteria appear bright against a dark background. For instance, a skin biopsy sample from a patient showing characteristic symptoms of leptospirosis, such as a rash, can be examined using dark-field microscopy to observe the presence of Leptospira bacteria.

5.Immunohistochemistry:

Immunohistochemistry involves using specific antibodies to identify and visualize Leptospira antigens in tissues. This technique is particularly useful in post-mortem examinations or cases where tissue biopsies are available. For example, immunohistochemistry can be used to confirm the presence of Leptospira antigens in kidney tissue obtained during an autopsy.

6.Serogrouping:
